Salman Khan joked and people took it seriously: AR Rahman

A few months ago, at musician AR Rahman’s album launch, Salman Khan commented that the composer was "average".

A lot was said and written about the actor’s statement. However, the musician brushes off these reports saying, "I think it was a joke, and people took it very seriously. He (Salman) called up the next day and even clarified it. He was very kind. He even asked me to score for a couple of his movies. I am just thinking about it."

Despite being flooded with work, composer AR Rahman remains jovial. He tells us about creating the background score for an upcoming Hollywood film, procrastinating at work to find better ideas, and how Indian singers haven’t got recognition in the west yet.

How was your experience of working on the background score for Million Dollar Arm?
Working in Hollywood is like a holiday because I do one thing at a time there, and seven things back home. I’m getting used to working there, but the travelling is exhausting. However, I had fun working on this film. 

What was the brief given to you? 
Usually, they send the script or I wait for the first cut to come in. I got to see some uncut scenes to get an idea about the film. (On the other hand) Indian films have a narration and songs are needed beforehand. They come for the background score after they have wrapped up the shoot. It’s a two-year process whereas in Hollywood it’s a three-month process. 

Do you face any criticism regarding your work?
It’s mostly about meeting deadlines, but it’s a system that I have to get used to. Sometimes I procrastinate certain things till the last minute in order to find better ideas.

Have you heard any of Priyanka Chopra’s singles? 
I have heard a couple of them. 

Do you think Indian talent is getting recognition in the west? 
Not to a high level. But Anoushka (Shankar) is famous, and in a good way. For pop music, it (recognition) will happen when it must. 

Do you plan to release singles or collaborate with anyone in the west?
I am so drained with my film work that I haven’t been able to finish my album. I still have four more songs to finalise for it. I also have lots of movies where I have to work with a team, which is more exciting, as singles mean that the responsibility is on your shoulders.

Salman Khan Hit-And-Run-Case: Two Witnesses Identify Actor in Court

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been identified by two witnesses in the 2002 hit-and-run case. The actor is being retried for culpable homicide not amounting to murder in a Mumbai court. If convicted, he could face a jail sentence of upto 10 years. (Also read: Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar in FuglyTitle Track )

On December 5 last year, the court ordered a fresh trial after the charges against the actor were enhanced to culpable homicide not amounting to murder. After several delays, the retrial began on April 29 with the partial deposition of one witness.(Also read: Salman Kicked about Poland as destination for Bollywood producers)

Mr Khan was earlier being tried for the lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which carries a punishment of upto two years in jail.

In September 2002, Mr Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.

The case has gone from court to court with arguments centred around whether Mr Khan was driving the car that day or not. The Mumbai police say they have enough evidence against him.

In 1998, Salman Khan spent three days in prison for killing black buck, an endangered species of deer, in Rajasthan. The actor's appeals in separate poaching cases are currently pending in the Rajasthan courts.

The 48-year-old actor has starred in some of Bollywood's highest-earning films in the last five years. He last appeared in January's Jai Ho, co-starring debutante Daisy Shah and was recently shooting for his movie Kick in Poland

Eyewitnesses to identify Salman Khan in court today

Bollywood actor Salman Khan is expected to appear before the court today in connection to hit-and-run case. The retrial of the case begins and in today’s hearing, eyewitnesses are expected to depose before the court and identify the man who rammed through the shop and run over the people sleeping on the pavement of the road. If the actor is found guilty then he would face a jail term of 10 years.

The case against him changed from ‘rash and negligent driving’ to a serious offense ‘culpable homicide not amounting to murder’ which carries a jail term of 10 years and for which Salman Khan has asked for a fresh trial. The court said that all the witnesses and the evidences will be re-examined.

The case dates back to September 28, 2002 when Salman Khan’s Toyota Land cruiser drove over five people who were sleeping on the footpath near Hill road in Bandra. In this accident, one lost his life and four others were severely injured.

After the accident, Salman Khan drove away in his car and appeared for surrender after eight hours. Eye witnesses said that it was Salman who was driving the vehicle though Salman denies the allegation. Since, he surrendered after eight hours, he and his family maintain the incident as accident though police reported it as hit and run case. Medical report further revealed that Salman was under the influence of alcohol when the incident took place.

Earlier Salman was tried for a lesser case of negligent and rash driving which attracted a sentence of two years. He never faced the punishment.

Salman Khan shooting non-stop for Eid release of Kick...

Salman Khan has always considered Eid to be a lucky period for him at the box office. And this year, after a break in 2013, the actor will be back again during the festival with his film Kick.

According to a source, "Salman recently returned from Poland where he was busy shooting for the film, but has taken a break this weekend since he's been shooting outdoor continuously. He will resume to the gruelling schedule next week onwards."

The source furthur added, "The shoot will resume on May 5. They will be shooting at Mehboob Studio in Bandra, which is a five-minute drive from Salman's house on Bandstand. In order to save time, the makers have booked nearly four floors of the studio - which is almost the entire place - and have five active sets running simultaneously."

As soon as they finish a particular portion in one studio, they will move on to shoot the next scene on the other set without any breaks.

Sets are being made and broken down continuously in order to wrap up the shoot on time.  When contacted, the spokesperson of the film confirmed the news.

Well, here's hoping Salman's Kick releases on time during Eid.

Salman Khan's KICK enjoys an open fortnight!

Salman Khan can now spread his legs really wide and 'kick' really strong. Pun intended. Reason being that now he has an entire fortnight open for himself when it comes to his next biggie KICK which is slated for 27th July release.

"With Vidya Balan's BOBBY JASOOS getting pre-poned from 1st August to 4th July, one more weekend has opened up for Salman Khan. There is no notable film lined up for release on this weekend. Since the next biggie would be Akshay Kumar's ITS ENTERTAINMENT which releases on 8th August, KICK would have 15 days all for itself," informs our source. 

In the times when even an open weekend without any competition whatsoever comes at a premium, as many as two back to back weekends being free for KICK is indeed music for Salman Khan's ears. Producer-director Sajid Nadiadwala too can rejoice as he would now have a wide chain of theaters as well as extensive show count at his disposal.

No biggie would come on 1st August now which is terrific indeed for Salman as he would be looking at making and breaking many records. The last time when a film had such a mega uninterrupted run, it was with Yash Raj and Aamir Khan's DHOOM 3 which had arrived sans any competition and raked in moolahfor weeks in succession. Later, though JAI HO did nett over 100 crores, quite a few Salman fans as well as those from the industry felt that their bhai comes with a mandate to deliver much bigger. 

With an open fortnight available and the reports about it being an out and out entertainer already trickling in, KICK could well make a huge splash at the box office once it arrives this Eid. 

Incidentally, Salman's last Eid release EK THA TIGER was a biggie too and had raked in 199 crores at the box office.

Salman Khan Shoots Non Stop For Kick's Eid Release Date...

Salman Khan has always considered Eid to be a lucky period for him at the box office. 

Now after a break in 2013, this year Salman is back to rule the box office on Eid with Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick.

The actor has been working non-stop to finish the movie, as the team has just a few months to complete the shoot and get into post-production of this action flick. 

Salman, who recently returned from the Poland schedule of Kick, will take the weekend off, but is back on set next week onwards.  

The shoot of Kick will resume on May 5 at Mehboob Studio in Bandra, which is a five-minute drive from Salman's house on Bandstand.      

To save time, and make the most of Salman's dates, the makers have booked nearly four floors of the studio - which is almost the entire place. They have erected five active sets that are operating simultaneously. 

As soon as they finish a particular portion in one area, they will move on to shoot the next scene on the other set without any breaks.

According to sources from the teamof Kick, lavish sets are being made and broken down continuously, as they do not want to waste even a single minute. 

This is a 25-day schedule where the entire cast of Kick will be participating. The shoot begins with talkie portions followed by the songs which will be shot once the regular scenes are done with.

Witness in Salman Khan's case identifies articles...

A witness in the 2002 hit-and-run case, involving Bollywood actor Salman Khan today identified articles seized by police from the accident spot but denied during cross-examination that he was tutored by police to draw the 'panchnama'.

"I am able to identify them as the articles which were seized by police from the spot where the car had met with an accident", said Samba Gowda, a tea vendor who had drawn the 'panchnama' after the mishap.
The witness was being examined by public prosecutor Jagannath Kenjalkar. He is the first one to depose in the re-trial of this case.

Among the articles seized by police after the mishap were broken glass pieces, some parts of vehicle's bumper, blood-soaked soil and a portion of the shop's shutter.

On September 28, 2002, the actor had run over his Toyota Land Cruiser on a group of persons sleeping on a footpath outside a bakery in suburban Bandra, killing one and injuring four others.
During cross-examination by defence lawyer Srikant Shivade, the witness denied that he was tutored by police.

"It would be wrong to say that police had not taken me to the accident spot and that later I was asked to sign the panchnama," the witness said.

To another question, the witness said, "I do not know whether the car was taken away by a crane before or after the panchnama was drawn."

Gowda further said that the papers of the car were not seized and also police did not open the door of the car.

However, when he was confronted with the 'panchnama' which made a mention of these things, the witness could not say as to why the police had recorded this.

To another question by advocate Shivade, the witness said, "I do not know who wrote the panchnama". He later said "police wrote it and I signed it".

"I did not personally supervise or note down the measurement taken by police of the distance between the shutter of the shop and the car", said Gowda, who hails from Karnataka.

The witness told Salman's lawyer that he does not hold a Licence to run the tea shop located near Bandra police station and also admitted that the civic body had fined him many times for this.
However, Gowda denied that he had signed the 'panchnama' only because police asked him to do so.

On May 6, the prosecution would examine an eye witness who was injured in the mishap. The court has asked Salman to be present on that day.

On December 5 last year, the court had ordered a fresh trial on the ground that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide, which was invoked against the actor midway through the case.

The charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10-year sentence. The actor had earlier been tried by a magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years.

The case, dragging on for over a decade, had taken a twist earlier this year when the magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide was made out against Salman and referred the matter to a sessions court, as cases under this offence are tried by a higher court.
