Salman Khan hit-and-run case: Retrial begins today, actor won't be in court

The 48-year-old actor is considered one of Bollywood's biggest draws and has starred in some of its highest-earning films

Actor Salman Khan has been exempted from appearing in the retrial of the hit-and-run case which begins in Mumbai today.

A Mumbai court ordered a fresh trial against Mr Khan last December, after the charge against him was enhanced from "rash and negligent driving" to the more serious "culpable homicide not amounting to murder." If convicted, the actor could face upto 10 years in jail.

All evidence and witnesses in the case will be re-examined.

In September 2002, Mr Khan was allegedly driving a Toyota Land Cruiser that ran over a group of people sleeping on the pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra. One person was killed and four others were injured in the accident.

The case has gone from court to court with arguments centred around whether Mr Khan was driving the car that day or not. The Mumbai police say they have enough evidence against him.

In 1998, Salman Khan spent three days in prison for killing black buck, an endangered species of deer, in Rajasthan. The actor's appeals in separate poaching cases are currently pending in the Rajasthan courts.

The 48-year-old actor is considered one of Bollywood's biggest draws and has starred in some of its highest-earning films in the last five years. He last appeared in January's Jai Ho, co-starring debutante Daisy Shah. He will next make a cameo appearance in O Teri, releasing this Friday.

BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi has found another supporter, this time from the B-town.Bollywood actor Salman Khan's father and veteran scriptwriter Salim Khan has said the Gujarat CM is at the crosshairs of critics because he has been winning continuously despite the 2002 riots.
In an exclusive interview to Aaj Tak, the 78-year-old filmwriter said,"Nobody blames the chief minister of Maharashtra for the riots which took place in 1992. I think nobody might even knows his name."

Khan not only defended Modi over the riots but also highlighted his government's track record in the state of Gujarat.
"There has not been a single communal riot in Gujarat in the past 12 years," he said.

However, Khan ruled out supporting Modi in any of his political rallies.Earlier, Bollywood actor Salman Khan had visited Gujarat as part of his promotional campaign for film Jai Ho. The 48-year-old superstar had raised many eyebrows after pictures of him flying kite with Modi had appeared in the public domanin.
Salman had also defended Modi saying he should not say sorry for the Gujarat riots.

Salman Khan plans to make Ritesh Deshmukh's Yellow in Hindi

RitesSuperstar Salman Khan, who watched actor-producer Riteish Deshmukh's Marathi production "Yellow" recently, is so touched with the film that he is now keen to remake it in Hindi."We are speaking to Riteish (Deshmukh) to make this film in Hindi," Salman told reporters here at the screeing of "Yellow".

Salman also said that he will have film's director Mahesh Limaye on board for the Hindi remake and will also have Gauri Gadgil - on whom "Yellow" is based - in the film."Yellow" deals with children with special needs and learning differences. It features Upendra Limaye, Aishwaraya Narkar, Usha Nadkarni and Mrunal Kulkarni in key roles.

2002 hit-and-run case: Salman Khan’s re-trial fails to begin, case deferred to April 28

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan appeared before Mumbai court in 2002 hit-and-run case.

The re-trial in the hit-and-run case involving actor Salman Khan was today deferred till April 28 by a sessions court as the prosecution sought time to produce witnesses in view of police deployment on election duty.
Investigating officer Rajendra Kane informed the court that police were deployed on election duty and hence they were not yet prepared to go ahead with the trial which was to commence today.
Sessions Judge D W Deshpande asked the prosecution to produce on April 28 the first witness who was injured in the mishap in which the actor was involved, followed by eye witnesses in May.
This is the second occasion when the fresh trial has not begun. On March 26, three witnesses failed to turn up as they were either not available or untraceable.
Salman’s lawyer Srikant Shivade said the actor was ready to face the trial while prosecutor Jagannath Kenjalkar said they would produce witnesses from April 28.
Clad in a white shirt and blue denim jeans, Salman came to the court and sat on a bench along with his bodyguard and sister Alvira. He keenly watched the proceedings and left as soon as the court announced the next date of hearing.
The judge ordered a fresh trial in this case, 12 years after the actor ran over his car on people sleeping on the road.
Although the prosecution has submitted a list of 64 witnesses, it would not examine all of them, according to the public prosecutor.
The prosecution had earlier submitted documents such as death certificate (of the person who was killed in the mishap) and injury certificates (of those who were injured) in this case. The court had admitted these documents after Salman’s lawyer submitted his say on admissibility of the documents.
Salman is facing the charge of running over his Toyota Land Cruiser on a group of persons sleeping on a footpath outside a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002, killing one and injuring four others.
On December 5 last year, the court had ordered a fresh trial on the ground that the witnesses had not been examined in the context of aggravated charge of culpable homicide, which was invoked against the actor midway through the case.
The charge of culpable homicide not amounting to murder attracts a 10-year sentence. The actor had earlier been tried by a magistrate for a lesser offence of causing death by negligence, which entailed an imprisonment of two years.
The case, dragging on for over a decade, had taken a twist earlier this year when the magistrate, after examining 17 witnesses, held that the charge of culpable homicide was made out against Salman and referred the matter to a sessions court, as cases under this offence are tried by a higher court.

Actor Salman Khan appeared in a Mumbai court today in connection with the hit-and-run case, the retrial of which has been adjourned to April 28. The actor filed an application stating he wouldn't be available on April 8 which is the date the retrial had been adjourned to.

The retrial of the case was scheduled to begin on March 26. Three witnesses who were to be examined in court that day failed to appear after which the trial was then adjourned to April 8. Mr Khan was exempted from appearing in court.

Salman Khan to don villain's cap in Dhoom 4?

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan may have a big surprise up his sleeve as he may be donning the bad boy's cap for the fourth franchise of the blockbuster 'Dhoom' series.

After breaking all records at the box-office, Aamir Khan's 'Dhoom 3' was definitely one of the highlights of 2013. Now the latest news doing the rounds is that Aamir's buddy Salman may be roped in to play the part of a villain in the fourth franchise.
The antagonist in the Dhoom series has always garnered more attention than any other character. After playing a villain for the first time on screen, Aamir must have definitely inspired Sallu bhai to give it a shot too.
Before Aamir, Hrithik Roshan and John Abraham had played the antagonists in the second and first Dhoom movies respectively.
So is Salman indeed the next?
